‘Rise to the Moment’ was the name given to a special Evensong in Winchester Cathedral on Sunday October 3rd. Churches Together in Winchester co-sponsored the event, which was designed to conclude Winchester Green Week, as well as recognising the season of Harvest. St Peter’s was one of 8 local churches who brought written commitments and banners to the event – in our case, the Climate Sunday Covenant which we signed at the beginning of September. Our banner can be seen in the accompanying photograph featuring Fr Mark, Dean Catherine Ogle and Peter McManus.
You can watch a video of the event on the Winchester Cathedral YouTube pages. Especially impressive was the sermon delivered by former Vice-Chancellor of Winchester University, Professor Joy Carter CBE. She laid great emphasis on the evils of factory farming and its negative impact on our climate, and urged us to reduce the meat content of our regular diet. It was good to see how many local Christians took the trouble to attend the service. Perhaps this will become an annual event, in which case we hope many more parishioners will wish to attend.
